Gabriel Santos da Costa was born in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, on March 23, 1980. At age 14, he began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under the legendary Rilion Gracie. Rilion is the youngest son of Carlos Gracie (one of the creators of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). In 2002, Rilion left Florianopolis leaving Gabriel’s Uncle, Claudio Arrais as the head instructor of his academy. Claudio is a 3rd degree black belt, 2 time world champion and co-founder of CLAN Jiu-Jitsu. CLAN Jiu-Jitsu has a network of over 10 academies in Southern Brazil, which makes it the largest association in the area. Gabriel had the opportunity to train directly with and receive private instruction from both Professor Claudio Arrais and Professor Rilion Gracie.
Gabriel continued to train Jiu Jitsu diligently while studying to receive his college degree in Business Administration from Federal University of Santa Catarina. After receiving his degree in 2003, he became an entrepreneur, owning his own successful business. Even while owning a business, Gabriel continued to train and compete in local Jiu Jitsu tournaments from white to brown belt. In 2004, he was awarded the prestigious Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu from his uncle, Claudio.
As a Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu, Gabriel proceeded to work actively in growing the Jiu Jitsu community in South Brazil by becoming the Vice President of ADJJS (Development of Jiu Jitsu and Submission Association). This association organized and promoted community events and major tournaments such as the South American Jiu Jitsu Tournament and South Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournament. Gabriel met Ralph Gracie in 2009 during a visit to the USA. Ralph was very impressed with Gabriel’s proficiency in Jiu Jitsu and extraordinary ability to teach. This inspired Ralph to ask Gabriel to teach under the Ralph Gracie Association.
Gabriel, now a 3rd degree black belt, is the head instructor of Ralph Gracie Chino Hills, CA. His amazing teaching ability, social skills and understanding of business has led the school to be one of the most successful BJJ academies in the Southern California today.
Sean Roberts (1st degree black belt) has been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 2005, at the young age of 15. Sean first started training at Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Placentia under black belt Brad Jackson and then black belt Eduardo Fraga who came from Brazil to take over teaching when Brad retired from full time teaching, though Sean also continued to take private lessons on a weekly basis for several years from Brad to enhance his game. Sean took to Jiu-Jitsu immediately and soon became known on the competition circuit. At the time Sean was competing there were very few teens his age to compete against so he was competing against adults in most tournaments and beating them. Sean quickly started collecting gold medals from the many tournaments he competed in and has continued to excel since then. Sean had made many trips up north to visit Ralph Gracie, and in 2009, he moved to San Francisco as a purple belt to train under Ralph. Sean started training at Ralph Gracie San Francisco under Ralph and black belt Kurt Osiander where he continued to compete in most every tournament and became even more known in the jiu-jitsu community. It was during that time that Sean was asked to fly to Maryland to compete in The BJJ Kumite against 12 of the best brown belts from around the world where he came in 2nd place in the gi portion. This was shown as a reality series on YouTube, and Sean became one of the most recognized brown belts in the world. He was given his Black Belt by Ralph Gracie in March of 2013. He moved to Chino Hills to teach in September of 2013. Sean has competed in over 200 tournaments throughout his nine years of training. Some of his more notable accomplishments are:
