Team Ralph Gracie Wins Big!

Team Ralph Gracie has been taking the tournament scene by storm!!  On September 10, two of our students,JACOB AND JALEN ALAAN, aged 6 and 11 respectively,  participated in NAGA in Las Vegas, one of the biggest BJJ tournaments. Jacob placed 1st in his division for Gi, and then tried the No-Gi division for the first time ever.  Having never really trained in No-Gi, he took 1st place, much to the surprise of  coaches from other academies whose kids had been training much longer! Jalen, Jacob’s older brother also took first place in Gi, but opted out of No-Gi since the kids in his weight class were way bigger.  Both kids took home Samuari Swords, which they specifically went there to win!! Congratulations Alaan Family!!

The following Saturday, September 17, several of our students  descended on The Las Vegas Convention Center to compete in the Quest for the Best BJJ and Submission Grappling Tournament and left with a bunch of medals and 4 LARGE belts. Following is a list of the competitors and what they won.

SEAN ROBERTS – 1ST PLACE BELT FOR BROWN BELT MIDDLE WEIGHT,  FINISHING HIS OPPONENTS BY WAY OF SUBMISSION!

ELIZABETH RUIZ – 1ST PLACE BELT FOR BLUE BELT WOMEN’S DIVISION AND ALSO A 1ST PLACE BELT FOR ABSOLUTE INTERMEDIATE WOMEN’S DIVISION, BOTH BY WAY OF SUBMISSION!

TERRENCE QUINN – SILVER AND BRONZE MEDALS FOR YOUNG ADULTS BECAUSE THERE WAS NO ONE IN THE SENIOR 1 DIVISION. GREAT JOB!

KEVIN LU – FOUR 1ST PLACE MEDALS AND ONE 1ST PLACE BELT FOR WIPING OUT EVERYONE ONE IN HIS DIVISION AND HIGHER DIVISIONS ALL DAY LONG! WE ARE VERY, VERY PROUD OF HIM. HE IS ONLY 14 YEARS OLD AND IS LOOKING AT A GREAT FUTURE IN JIU-JITSU.

DALLAS GRUBER – 1ST PLACE FOR NO-GI AND 2ND PLACE FOR GI.

GABRIEL LEAL – 1ST PLACE IN HIS DIVISION FOR GI AND 3RD PLACE AFTER FIGHTING 5 BLUE BELTS WHEN HE IS ONLY A WHITE BELT!

Congratulations to everyone!!!

Kids Win at Operation Grapple

On September 24, while the Adults were competing at the American Nationals, our Kids Competition Team competed at Operation Grapple in Murrietta. Taking home the Gold, as usual, was Jacob Alaan! Also taking home Gold, is one of our newer students, Cameron Barbin. He has been training for less than six months in BJJ with us but also competes as a high-level gymnast. He surprised everyone by submitting his opponent with a triangle choke while in a triangle choke himself! Sounded like it was the submission of the day! Ruben Martos-Reyes took home a Gold medal after submitting both his opponents by rear-naked choke and arm bar respectively. Jalen Alaan received a Silver medal in his division and Jayven Griffith received a Silver medal in the 125-135 lb division while weighing only 115! He also received a Gold medal in a second bracket match-up.  Also taking home Silver medals were Ian Esparza, Ryan Jose and Nicky Alvarado, and bringing home a Bronze medal was Logan Esparza.

We had one adult compete. Aaron Navarrete, our Divison 1 Wresting Coach, who has recently begun training in jiu-jitsu, brought home a Gold Medal!!!

Congratulations to all! These competitions are fun, and it doesn’t matter if you win or lose.

American Nationals Tournament, Sept. 24-25. Adults Win Big Again!

On September 24th and 25th, Cal State Dominguez Hills was home to the American Nationals. This is a big tournament run every year by the IBJJF.  Sean Roberts, Brown Belt, has two competitors to beat in the Middle Weight Division, and does so by a quick triangle choke on the first guy.  The next guy had already fought two other guys, winning fairly easily, only to be beaten by Sean in a 14-2 victory  to take home the Gold!!!  Later that evening, Sean competed in the Open Weight Brown Belt Divsion. His first two competitors were, shall we say for lack of a better word, Gigantic!  Weighing at least 70 lbs more than Sean, he impresses everyone by triangle choking the first guy and beating the second by points, showing off some incredible flexibility.  His next oponent, much to Sean’s liking, was more his size. Sean goes on to win by triangle choke once again! Now competing for the Gold is Sean and one of his team mates from up north, and they close out the division with a Gentleman’s Agreement.

On Sunday, Jeff Munoz, our blue belt, wins the Bronze medal after beating two opponents by way of submission! Gabriel Leal and Seton Seto, both white belts, also take home Gold medals. Congratulations to everyone!!!

Next up – US Open in San Jose on October 15th and 16th.

In-House Tournament – August 6, 2011

On August 6, 2011 we will be having an in-house tournament. This is for Chino Hills and the Anaheim Hills location.  Kids will be at 10:00 and the Adults will go at 1:00.  Bring your family and friends to cheer you on. The cost is $20 and includes a Ralph Gracie Competition Team T-shirt.  Please let Laura know by Thursday, July 28 so the right amount of shirts can be ordered. If you do not plan on competing come cheer your team mates on.  This is going to be good practice for all the tournaments that are coming up.

In-House Tournament a Huge Success!

On August 6, we had our in-house tournament and it was a huge success. We had 80 competitors from both Chino Hills and Anaheim. The place was packed! The Kids divsions went first at 10:00 and the Teen and Adult Divisions started at 12:30.  Everything went perfectly. . Each competitor got a Ralph Gracie Competition T-shirt.Thankfully we were able to open the back roll up door and put chairs outside under easyups for spectators who did not get seats on the bleachers. It was just like a real tournament, only it ran on time and there were no complaints!  Can’t wait for the next one!!

Ralph Gracie Takes Grappling X By Storm!

On August 21, we had 3 kids and about 5 adults compete in the Grappling X tournament at Fight Lab in Murietta. Our kids were awesome. Jacob Alaan and Ruben Martos-Reyes both took first place, having two matches each and just dominating their opponents, with Jacob scoring 22 points to 0 on each match and Ruben Martos-Reyes winning by arm bar and rear naked choke. Ryan Perez also received second place for his efforts.  The adults all competed and there were a lot of first place medals being handed out to Team Ralph Gracie. Our presence was definitely noticed by all!  We our very proud of our students who competed and very thankful we have such great black belt instructors! Conquering the World One Submission at a Time!!!
