Adrian Elicegui Receives His Black Belt

After many, many years training at Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Chino Hills, Adrian Elicegui  received his much earned black belt on July 27, 2013. Adrian now joins our other black belts, Gabriel Costa, Greg Rivera, Daniel Pollaccia and Sean Roberts.  Adrian teaches our adult no-gi class on Saturday mornings, and will also be substituting for other classes when needed. Congratulations Adrian!!!

Sean Roberts Receives His Black Belt!!!

After almost 8 years of training, Sean Roberts received his much awaited black belt on March 12, 2013 in San Francisco. Sean has been training in the Bay Area for the past few years with Ralph Gracie, Kurt Osiander and Eduardo Fraga. He started jiu-jitsu at the age of 16 with Brad Jackson. Sean has competed in over 150 tournaments and has been featured in Gracie Magazine, Jiu-Jitsu Magazine, Budovideos.com, onthemat.com, and most recently competed and was 12-1 in the gi division in the BJJ Kumite, where he submitted several of his opponents with the now famous “Sean Roberts Calf Slicer.” The BJJ Kumite can be seen in the Kumite Episode Section of this website. Sean’s early “claim to fame” was when he tapped out current UFC Lightweight Champion, Benson Henderson with a triangle choke, a submission for which Sean is known for using to tap out many of his opponents. Ralph Gracie Chino Hills awaits his return sometime within the year to teach.

Ralph Gracie Kids Shine at the All America’s Tournament

On January 26 & 27, our kids competed in gi and no-gi at the NABJJF All America’s Tournament in Los Angeles. Bringing home the gold in the kids division were Ruben Martos-Reyes for no-gi, Carson Contreras and Robbie and Ryan Allen for both Gi and No-Gi. Since they are brothers and had both defeated the people they went against, they shared the honors of 1st and 2nd place in both Gi and No-Gi. Bringing home silver in the Gi Division were Ruben Martos-Reyes and Victor Bonato.  In the Juvenile Division, McKenna Hutchison, who is a 13-year-old orange belt, had to compete in a higher division with 15-year-old blue belts.  McKenna was able to defeat everyone in those divisions taking home gold medals in Gi and No-Gi and Gi and No-Gi Absolute Divsions for a total of 4 gold medals! I don’t think we have ever had someone bring home quadruple Gold! Congrats to everyone who competed and a big thank you to our black belt Gabriel Costa, who spent his entire weekend coaching our students at the tournament. Next up is the Kids Pan Ams! Go Team Ralph Gracie!

Team Ralph Gracie Wins Big!

Team Ralph Gracie has been taking the tournament scene by storm!!  On September 10, two of our students,JACOB AND JALEN ALAAN, aged 6 and 11 respectively,  participated in NAGA in Las Vegas, one of the biggest BJJ tournaments. Jacob placed 1st in his division for Gi, and then tried the No-Gi division for the first time ever.  Having never really trained in No-Gi, he took 1st place, much to the surprise of  coaches from other academies whose kids had been training much longer! Jalen, Jacob’s older brother also took first place in Gi, but opted out of No-Gi since the kids in his weight class were way bigger.  Both kids took home Samuari Swords, which they specifically went there to win!! Congratulations Alaan Family!!

The following Saturday, September 17, several of our students  descended on The Las Vegas Convention Center to compete in the Quest for the Best BJJ and Submission Grappling Tournament and left with a bunch of medals and 4 LARGE belts. Following is a list of the competitors and what they won.

SEAN ROBERTS - 1ST PLACE BELT FOR BROWN BELT MIDDLE WEIGHT,  FINISHING HIS OPPONENTS BY WAY OF SUBMISSION!

ELIZABETH RUIZ - 1ST PLACE BELT FOR BLUE BELT WOMEN’S DIVISION AND ALSO A 1ST PLACE BELT FOR ABSOLUTE INTERMEDIATE WOMEN’S DIVISION, BOTH BY WAY OF SUBMISSION!

TERRENCE QUINN - SILVER AND BRONZE MEDALS FOR YOUNG ADULTS BECAUSE THERE WAS NO ONE IN THE SENIOR 1 DIVISION. GREAT JOB!

KEVIN LU - FOUR 1ST PLACE MEDALS AND ONE 1ST PLACE BELT FOR WIPING OUT EVERYONE ONE IN HIS DIVISION AND HIGHER DIVISIONS ALL DAY LONG! WE ARE VERY, VERY PROUD OF HIM. HE IS ONLY 14 YEARS OLD AND IS LOOKING AT A GREAT FUTURE IN JIU-JITSU.

DALLAS GRUBER - 1ST PLACE FOR NO-GI AND 2ND PLACE FOR GI.

GABRIEL LEAL - 1ST PLACE IN HIS DIVISION FOR GI AND 3RD PLACE AFTER FIGHTING 5 BLUE BELTS WHEN HE IS ONLY A WHITE BELT!

Kids Win at Operation Grapple

On September 24, while the Adults were competing at the American Nationals, our Kids Competition Team competed at Operation Grapple in Murrietta. Taking home the Gold, as usual, was Jacob Alaan! Also taking home Gold, is one of our newer students, Cameron Barbin. He has been training for less than six months in BJJ with us but also competes as a high-level gymnast. He surprised everyone by submitting his opponent with a triangle choke while in a triangle choke himself! Sounded like it was the submission of the day! Ruben Martos-Reyes took home a Gold medal after submitting both his opponents by rear-naked choke and arm bar respectively. Jalen Alaan received a Silver medal in his division and Jayven Griffith received a Silver medal in the 125-135 lb division while weighing only 115! He also received a Gold medal in a second bracket match-up.  Also taking home Silver medals were Ian Esparza, Ryan Jose and Nicky Alvarado, and bringing home a Bronze medal was Logan Esparza.

We had one adult compete. Aaron Navarrete, our Divison 1 Wresting Coach, who has recently begun training in jiu-jitsu, brought home a Gold Medal!!!

Congratulations to all! These competitions are fun, and it doesn’t matter if you win or lose.
